About the Workshop
Join The Tamburitzans for a celebration of creativity, culture, and community with The Art of Pysanky – Ukrainian Egg Dyeing! Whether you’re new to this ancient craft or have some experience, this workshop offers a fun, welcoming experience for everyone — especially local community members who may be curious about Ukrainian traditions or looking for a new artistic challenge.
You’ll learn the beautiful wax-resist method used to create pysanky — decorated eggs with vibrant colors and meaningful symbols. From spring rituals to symbolic motifs of life, protection, and renewal, pysanky express heritage and hope through art that transcends language. This workshop is a chance to join in that tradition, and to take home your own handcrafted piece of cultural art — perfect for display, gifts, or just a treasured keepsake.
Meet Your Instructor – Carol Novosel
We’re honored to welcome Carol Novosel as our instructor. Carol is a highly respected folk artist from the Shenango Valley region who has spent a lifetime mastering the art of pysanky. She began learning this craft at a young age from her mother and grandmother around the kitchen table, continuing a lineage of traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations.
Over the years, Carol has created tens of thousands of exquisitely decorated pysanky eggs, each reflecting the complexity and joy of this folk art. Her work not only preserves tradition but also fosters community engagement with Ukrainian cultural heritage. Carol’s eggs have been displayed in museums, published in books, and given as gifts to notable figures — and her thoughtful teaching style makes this ancient craft accessible to people of all backgrounds. erieartsandculture.org
